Why is there space above the sky?
What else would there be?
Space is everywhere. Literally.
Space is just the enormous empty gap between ‘things’ in the universe. For example, below is a real photo showing the Earth (left) and the Moon (right):
All that blackness all around is empty space — there’s nothing there.
Our Earth is but a tiny blue speck in the infinite black emptiness of space. Here’s the Earth and the Moon again, as photographed in 2013 by a space probe near Saturn, hundreds of millions of miles away:
The entire universe consists of things like planets, moons, stars, galaxies and dust clouds — but the vast majority of these things are incredibly, unbelievably, unimaginably far apart. ‘Space’ is simply the vast emptiness that exist between and around them.
